The Biotree Urn has been designed to shape a greener planet by changing our traditions from that of graves, to those of forests. Celebrating life with a living memorial in the form of a tree.

Traditional burial is not sustainable, and could cause an ever-expanding crisis globally, damaging the environment and using up vast amounts of space.

The Biotree Urn is made using natural plant fibers and materials that aid in fertilizing the surrounding soil and lowering the pH levels of cremated remains, creating a suitable environment for a tree to grow.

We take great care in selecting tree species that are harmonious to your local environment, complementing the unique ecosystem that surrounds them and creating a living tribute for those who now rest at their roots. A certificate is provided with each Biotree Urn, which families can redeem to receive their memorial tree sapling.

How it Works

Using the link above, redeem your memorial tree sapling with the unique code printed on the certificate included with the urn. Once redeemed, the tree will arrive in 5-10 business days.

Fill the provided biodegradable bag with cremated remains, and place it in the base of the urn on top of the filter. Securely reattach the base of the urn.

Place the memorial tree sapling into the urn. Add 27 fl oz (800 ml) of water and use the wooden tool to move the expanding coco peat disk around the tree’s root ball.

If part of the root ball remains exposed, cover it with potting soil. If you choose to use a seed instead, simply plant it 1 inch into the peat it is expanded.

The Biotree Urn can remain unplanted in your house for several weeks, depending on your local climate. At any time, or when the urn starts to crack, plant the Biotree Urn leaving the top visible.

Water the tree inside the urn as needed. The Biotree Urn and the enclosed ashes will naturally return to the earth over time as the tree grows.

  • What is the Biotree Urn made of?

    The Biotree Urn is made using natural bamboo and other plant fibers, as well as natural binding agents. The center is a handmade Portuguese cork disk, with a nutrient-rich coco peat disk nested inside the cork.


  • Can I use a Biotree Urn with old ashes?

    Yes, the Biotree Urn is designed to grow a tree irrespective of the age of the ashes.


  • How much cremated remains does a Biotree Urn use?

    The Biotree Urn fits up to 90 cubic inches of remains. You can use less if you prefer, and the remaining remains can be stored or scattered as you like.


  • How long can I keep the Biotree Urn after planting a tree?

    After planting a sapling or seed, the Biotree Urn itself can be kept unplanted for several weeks. This provides your family with a period of time to keep a loved one close after saying goodbye.


  • Can I plant a Biotree Urn in a pot?

    Yes, the Biotree Urn can be planted in a pot as long as the pot is filled with nutrient-rich soil to ensure the successful and healthy growth of a tree.


  • How does the geotag system work?

  • Should the tree be placed in the urn before or after adding water?

    We suggest adding water to expand the Coco-peat disk after the tree in placed into the top of the urn. Then as the Coco-peat disk expands, the soil can be gently maneuvered to create a pilot hole into which the tree root will lie.


  • Is it normal for water to leak from the cork divider after watering the urn?

    Yes, while the root system becomes established and the cork expands, the cork divider may leak slightly. The excess liquid can simply be wiped away.


  • How much will the coco peat disk expand?

    There’s ample soil in the disk to plant a tree, but if you see the root ball exposed after expansion you should add potting soil to cover the root ball.
